King Kamehameha III Palace

Back in July I got lost on a Nuuanu Trail and accidently stumbled upon this incredible Hawaiian palace ruins. This is King Kamehameha III's Summer Palace. This palace was used to entertain guests of up to 10,000 people. This amazed me to imagine 10,000 people celebrating in the middle of this forest.

I have seen some people both local and tourist climb on top of the walls and pose for pictures. Please do not climb on the deteorating walls or dump trash here. There is no one to restore this palace or to pick up litter. Climbing helps losen the stones from the castle and destroy the ruins. Please be respectful and enjoy without touching, climbing or littering.

To the left of the palace was the remains of a giant imu pit. Imu pits is where Hawaiians would place the pig into the earth to cook. They would hunt the pig and then dig a big hole in the ground to place the meat and heap hot rocks on top of the meat to cook it. They call this "Kalua Pork" and its very yummy.

This was a memorable hike for me. This palace seemed to remind me of the invisible human thread which links both present and past and with preservation: the future.
